CEST Profile

CEST Kompetenzzentrum für elektrochemische Oberflächentechnologie GmbH is an SME and a K1 competence centre under the Austrian Comet programme. It employs over 40 people, from students to experienced researchers and support staff. The centre specialises in the study of electrochemical surface technologies, combining the expertise and knowledge base of its academic partners (TU Graz, TU Vienna and University of Vienna) with involvement of leading industrial organisations (Andritz AG, Atotech Deutschland GmbH, EADS Deutschland GmbH, Henkel KgaA, Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH, Voestalpine Stahl GmbH, etc.) and ARC Seibersdorf.

CEST has well equipped laboratories with electrochemical equipment including rotating electrode (disc, cylinder, ring-disc) apparatus, flow cell test-rig, a wide range of potentiostats and galvanostats (to cover the nA to multiple A ranges), a semi-automated plating line, spark anodisation equipment (600 V, 20 A) and impedance analysers. General in house characterisation facilities includes FTIR, Raman microscopy, ESEM, EDX, three X-ray diffractometers, AFM, profilometer, glow discharge profiler (GDOES) and optical microscopes with hardness and contact angle measurement fixtures. A range of sample preparation equipment is also available.

CEST has undertaken much work in the fields of metal deposition and dissolution (including zinc) and possesses suitable facilities and know-how to undertake and characterise these processes.
